Phoenix Big Screen

Problem

Every season the Phoenix goes through a partial rebrand involving a new design language, partners, new player rosters, and new kit which means the matchday animation library can't just be reused season to season. With around 40+ players across both the A-League Men's and Women's squads needing individual goal and lineup animations, plus academy players who can be promoted into the first team with only a few hours' notice on matchday, the volume and turnaround needed a system that could scale rather than one-off builds for each player.

Solution

A template system was built by me in After Effects that separates the animation structure from the player-specific assets such as cutouts from our Getty kit shoots, names, numbers, and partner logos. It’s built each year so that each new player can be dropped into the existing template to speed up the process and allow for a quick turnaround when needed.

Each player is exported three ways: a story-sized social piece for goal celebrations, a big-screen version for in-stadium goal replays, and a separate version used during the starting XI read-out before kickoff.

Beyond player animations, the same LED screens carry pitchside marketing and atmosphere content throughout the season. That involves additional goal collateral, membership pushes, next-match promotion, and end-of-game thank you animations which keeping the stadium feeling consistently branded across every touchpoint.
